This month I feature a very special project that I had the privilege to work on and was the first of its kind for me. I
was commissioned by Craig Remington of New Jersey to custom make all the conversion figures for his One Of A Kind
play set called Custer in the Civil War. Craig is a well known toy soldier collector and recently acquired this play set
box from Dreamwish Playset Box Artist Ron Lizorty. I have seen Ron's custom made play set boxes in various toy
soldier magazines however nothing compares to seeing one in person. All I can say is that his box art is absolutely
fantastic! After purchasing this One Of A Kind play set box the next step for Craig was to fill it with civil war figures.
That is when he asked me to provide all custom made TSSD conversion figures for his play set. Not only was this the
first time ever that I was asked to make conversion figures for an entire play set but it was a huge task to make
approximately 150 conversion poses with each one being slightly different. As many of you know I am a "one man
show" so there is no mass production of my figures. Each one is done one at a time by hand and this project took about
two months to complete. The set contains approximately 100 mounted figures, 24 artillerymen, 20 dismounted
cavalry as well as some specialty poses. I also included some of my converted horses like the wounded horse, rearing
horse and a few dead horses all made from TSSD (Toy Soldiers of San Diego) horses. The horse handler pose is shown
with horses made by Larry Patterson of P & P Products and were for display only. Craig wanted a special General
Custer figure for this set however I did realize my limitations since I am not a sculptor. So with this in mind I
provided him with a Britain's mounted General Custer figure which is exquisitely painted. This is the one and only
figure that I did not make and it really is the centerpiece of the play set. For the purpose of these pictures I provided
the Britain's cannons as well as the other props like the buildings, fences and trees. I am sure Craig will be adding
many more accessories to his play set in order to enhance its appearance. I believe his ultimate goal is to have this
featured in Rusty Kern's Playset Magazine. In doing so I believe that collectors will see how conversion figures could
very well "make their dreams come true" for those play sets that were never made by Marx or other companies. If
you have any questions please feel free to email me. Now ENJOY THE PICS!!!!!
